Films have been a popular mass medium. With the technological advancement in film, film production as a field has become very competitive and challenging. Film production offers mainly four careers:

Film Direction


Sound recording/sound engineering


Film editing

Film Direction:

Film Directors are responsible for the whole treatment of the films. Cost of the film, sequencing of the story or episode, locations and scenes in the film, types of shots, etc. This means that film directors have to know about every aspect of film production. They are required to guide actors and technicians so as to produce a film of his vision.



This is a technical job but it requires creativity and imagination in order to make a film with best photographic effects.

Director explains the cinematographer about the type of shot and the emphasis the scene he/she wants. He / she has to work out the details of the types of shots, angles etc. with the director before starting shooting.

Sound Recording / Sound Engineering:

This is also a technical job. Sound recordists are required to insert sound effects according to the mood and theme of the film.


Film Editing:

Film editing involves assembling and cutting the finished film in order to create a film with proper sequencing and organization which gives meaning to the film and highlights the theme.

It is done with the help of editing machine in the editing room. The editor’s job requires high level of creativity same as that of Director’s.

For all the job opportunities available in film production, imagination, creative ability, technical knowledge of film production, and willingness to work with the team and readiness to do hard work are required.


Courses in the aspects of film production are offered by various institutions (Appendix-C). These courses qualify an individual to step into film production industry or advertising industry and even television. Practical knowledge in film making is equally important as theoretical. One has to prove himself/herself practically.
