Notes on the main functions of Thyroid gland of human body

The thyroid gland lies in the lower part of the neck. It is a highly vascular gland, brownish red in colour and surrounded by a fibrous capsule. It consists of two lobes lying one on either side of the trachea and joined together by a strip of thyroid tissue called the isthmus or the thyroid.

Brief note on Mammalian thyroid

It is a biolobed gland lies close to each other as either side of the trachea situated at the roof of throat just behind the thyroid cartilage. Both the lobes of thyroid joined by thin connective tissue called isthomus crossing in front of the second third and fourth tracheal rings.

It is a bilobed gland presentation the neck. The two lobes are located an either side of the larynx and connected by a narrow transverse isthmus of tissue across the ventral surface of trachea, just below the larynx.

What are the functions of the Thyroid Gland ?

It is a large, bilobed gland (2cm x 2 cm x 2cm) behind the larynx (voice –box) in the neck. Human thyroid weighs 25 g. Between the lobes is a connecting isthmus. It secretes thyroxine and thyrocalcitronin hormones.
