Astute cricket administrator and a fine player in his times, Chandu Borde was born on July 21, 1934 at Pune in Maharashtra. He played in the Indian domestic cricket for the teams Baroda and Maharashtra.

He started playing international cricket in 1958. His first match was against the West Indies at Mumbai. He made his way into the Indian team as a promising player in the 1950’s. By 1980’s he developed himself as one of the leading all-rounder’s of the Indian team. From the mid-sixties to the late sixties he was one of the dependable batsmen in the Indian batting order.

The fact is that he was the only Indian in the Rest of the World team that played at Barbados in a commemoration match in 1967. He was technically a perfect batsman and played all the shots during his play.

Chandu Borde was a great admirer of Vijay Hazare’s batting style. He tried to imitate him but in a more attacking way. He was also a useful leg spinner. His enormous experiences of the game have proved invaluable during his tenure as the chairman of the selection committee.
