Of the reliable openers in the Indian cricket team was Anshuman Gaekwad. He was born on September 23, 1952 at Mumbai in Maharashtra. In the Indian domestic cricket he played for Baroda.

Gaekwad made his debut in Test cricket against the West Indies in the third Test in the 1974-75 series at Kolkata. His first One-Day International was against England.

Anshuman Gaekwad’s chief claim to fame is being Sunil Gavaskar’s dependable partner in many Tests in 1970’s. He was not a prolific player; still he always compensated his lacuna by consistent performance.

Gaekwad always faced up bravely to the fastest of bowlers with a lot of grit. Being a steady player, he never tried to play extravagantly. His concentration during the game was enormous.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

His highest score in Test cricket is 201 against Pakistan. But his most fantastic inning was of 81 runs against the West Indies at Kingston pitch. An astute analyzer of the game, Gaekward coached the Indian team in 1990s.
