Inspire of the diversities in different fields – physical, social, linguistic, cultural and religious – India as described by V.A. Smith has a “fundamental unity” and that is what has held such a vast nation together for thousands of years. The simple explanation of common heritage is not enough. The answer lies in the overwhelming impact of Hinduism on Indian minds. Sir Herbert Risley has observed, “Beneath the manifold diversity of physical and social type, language, custom and religion which strikes the observer in India, there can still be discerned a certain underlying uniformity of life from the Himalayas to Cape Camorin.” India represents a remarkable diversity out of which a unity has evolved. Some prefer to describe it as the expression of basic and original unity in its various manifestations. Unity has gradually evolved out of diverse and often contending elements.
