India is a land of diversities. Yet it is possible to find a basic unity in Indian culture.

(1) First, essential ideas about philosophy, literature including the outlook of life is similar throughout the country.

(2) Second, in respect of performing art like dance and music as well a thread of unity and continuity is discernible across extreme north and the southern tip of India.

(3) Third, as a proof of cultural unity one may refer to the unity of language in India.

In the third century BC Prakrit served as the common language throughout the country. Later on this place was taken by Sanskrit.

(4) Fourth, as a part of the cultural unity active amongst the Indians reference may be made of the rules which cover social customs, festivals, marriage, etc.

These are more or less common amongst the Indians living in different regions.
