These soils occupy a narrow belt along the piedmont area of the Himalayas in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal.

These have been formed by the deposition of the eroded material from the Si walik hills. Their upper surface contains sandy loam to silty loam but B horizon preserves boulders of different shape and size. Owing to faulty drainage the area has marshy lands. The soil is fertile and supports luxuriant forest growth.

The clearing of forests for agricultural purposes has made this area susceptible to soil erosion and frequent flooding.
