It lives in tropical regions of Africa and America. The fertilized female burrows into the skin of feet and produces ulcers. Also it can produce gas gangrene due to secondary infection. Sand fleas are not found in India.

REDUVID BUGS

They are also called as cone-nose bugs. They are large sized insects measuring about one inch in length. They live on the blood of animals and.man. They are found in the cracks and fissures of walls and ceilings. Redid bugs transmit changes disease. They are controlled by spraying HHC or dieldrine.

TICKS

They are blood sucking parasites of vertebrate animals. There are two kinds of ticks: hard ticks and soft ticks. Ticks have an oval shaped body which is separated into head, thorax and abdomen. The head of soft tick is in the underside whereas the head of hard tick is in the anterior end.

The life cycle of ticks involves four stages: eggs, larva, nymph and adult. Diseases transmitted by hard ticks are tick typhus, viral encephalitis and viral fevers. Soft ticks transmit Q fever and relaps­ing fever.
