There are four groups of mosquitoes in India which transmit diseases. They are:

1. Anopheles

2. Culler

Parts of a mosquito

An adult mosquito has a head, thorax and abdomen.

Head: It has 1. a pair of compound eyes. 2. Proboscis which is a long needle structure used for biting. 3. a pair of palpi on either side of proboscis. 4. a pair of antenna .

Thorax: It is large and rounded. It contains a pair of wings and three pairs of legs.

Abdomen: It is long and narrow. It consists of 10 segments. The last two segments are modified to form external genitalia.

Life cycle of mosquito

The four stages involved in the life cycle of mosquito are egg, larva, pupa and adult.

1. Egg: Eggs are laid on the surface of water. 100 to 250 eggs are laid at a time. The egg stage lasts for 1 to 2 days.

2. Larva: It is free swimming. It contains an elongated body which can be divided into head, thorax and abdomen. It feeds on algae, bacteria and vegetable matter. It molts three times. The larval stage lasts for 5 to 7 days.

3. Pupa: It is the resting stage. It lasts for 1 to 2 days. The pupa is comma shaped with a large body and small tail. It does not feed.

4. Adult: When the development is complete, the skin of the pupa splits and an adult mosquito emerges.

CONTROL OF MOSQUITO

Mosquitoes can be controlled by following measures:

1. Larvae: Larva can be controlled by maintaining a clean environment, avoiding stagnation of water, providing clean drainage etc. Also they can be controlled by using chemical parricides like Paris green, function and abate.

2. Adult mosquitoes: They can be controlled by spraying DDT and pyrethrum extract.

3. Mosquito bite: Mosquito bite can be prevented by using mosquito nets, screens. Also mosquito repellents like diethyltoluamide can be applied on the skin.
