The United Nations Organization is an attempt to stop and banish war wherever it may raise its grisly head. It came into being on 18th April, 1946, as the result of a conference of 50 nations of the world, held at San Francisco in April 1945. War has become so destructive that if humanity does not end war, war will end humanity. The next war would be an atomic war and it might be the last war.

The Security Council is the most important and active organ of the U.N.O. It consists of 11 members. The Big Five Powers-U.S.A., Britain, France, Russia, China-are permanent members and there are six non-permanent members, who are elected for two years by the General Assembly.

The Security Council is competent to take all measures to preserve world peace including persuasion, negotiation mediation conciliation, arbitration, economic sanctions and military measures. The U.N.O. stands for Peace, Security, Human Rights Law and Freedom. It is out to end war which is a curse and a blight on man’s prosperity.

At present, the U.N.O. is dominated by the Anglo-American bloc. The Anglo-American bloc and the Communist bloc are constantly at daggers drawn. There are vested interests. The right of veto, given to the Big Five, makes the taking of any decision impossible. If anyone of the Big Five chooses to exercise the veto, it can debar the other ten members from taking any decision.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

But in spite of all these handicaps, the U.N.O. has done commendable work, It is all due to the efforts of this august body that today there is a cease-fire in Egypt, in Kashmir, in Hungary, in Indonesia, in Korea and in Palestine and in Congo. It is not a small gain. War today is a modern global war. A modern global war means total annihilation, universal destruction. But the U.N.O is working for peace all over the world.

The non-political bodies of the U.N.O. like World Health Organization (W.H.O.) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (U.N.E.S.C.O.) are doing commendable work. There is also the Court of International Justice to which the weaker nations of the world can look for justice.

In short, the U.N.O. born of man’s anguish and longing, is the only hope today in a world torn by violence, selfishness and greed.
