He is generally well-dressed, for city students are fashionable and decently dressed. He is capable, intelligent and tactful. A man of ordinary ability cannot manage city students who are intelligent and mischievous, too.

They always tease a new teacher and put his ability to the test in many ways. They get on his nerves if they find he is, in any way, inefficient. A city teacher has to put in hard work. There is no place for him if he cannot show a good result.

He is not only efficient as a teacher but also a specialist, in games, sports and scouting. He is a good writer and speaker. If he is not, he always remains at the lowest rung of the ladder. As city life is expensive, he has to undertake tuition work in order to supplement his income. If he does not like tuition work which is degrading, he takes to the writing of cheap notes, guides and test papers to add to his income.

There is ample scope for a city teacher to make money. Some city teachers, who work in big and well established schools, have made fortunes. They own houses and can boast of a big bank balance. There are others who are content with what little they get. They are devoted to their work and find greatest consolation in building their school and making the careers of their students.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

A city high school teacher has ample opportunities to make friends with officials and other important public men. Their sons are entrusted to his care. If he does his duty by them honestly and faithfully, he earns reputation.

If he mixes freely with the boys in their games, sports and other activities, they begin to love him. Respect cannot be gained for the mere asking or as a matter of right. It has to be earned by a faithful performance of duty. A city high school teacher can command respect in society if he works in missionary spirit in his own sphere of activities.
