It is the 4th Generation wireless, the stage broad mobile communication that will super cede 3G.

It is sometimes referred to as ‘MAGIC’ which stand for Mobile Multimedia Anytime Anywhere Global Mobility support integrated wireless and customized wireless service.

These 4G mobiles gives 3D virtual reality in which people, places, products will be able to interact as the cyber and real world are merged. It provides the ability to feel as if we are present at an event even if we are not. It combines applications and technologies like Wi-Fi and WiMax, so that highest throughout and lowest cost wireless network is possible, providing high quality, high security and any kind of services, anytime, anywhere to users.

4G wireless networks use two types of addresses for communication between two devices, for example a computer and a cell phone. Each node will be assigned a 4G-IP (Internet Protocal) address, which will be formed by a permanent home IP address and a dynamic care of address that will represent the phone’s actual location, when a computer using internets wants to communicate with a cell phone in the wireless network, the computer will send a packet to the 4G-IP address of the cell phone.


Then a directory server on the cell phone’s home network will forward this packet to the cell phone’s care of address through a mobile IP. The directory server will also inform the computer of the cell phone’s care of address (real location), so that the next packets can be sent to the cell phone directly.

The advanced applications of 4G systems will primarily be location based services. 4G location applications would utilize visualized, virtual navigation schemes that would support a remote data base containing graphical representation of streets, buildings and other physical characteristics of large area.

In simple language the benefits of 4G technology would be in providing MMS, multimedia and video applications in mobile or wireless format. However, the major benefits that 4G technology will provide include.

(i) Tele Geoprocessing:


It is a combination of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS), working together in high capacity wireless mobile system. By using this facility, public safety will be enhanced by reading the environment of even a remote place and understanding the problems of concerned areas.

(ii) Virtual Navigation:

By use of 4G, the data base can be accessed by a subscriber in a moving vehicle equipped with the appropriate wireless device to know about the roads and locations in advance.

(iii) Tele medicine:


With the use of this technology, paramedic assistance could be provided to a victim of traffic accident in a remote location. It would also be helpful to access medical records (eg. X-ray sheets) and establish a video conference so that, a remotely-based surgeon could provide on screed assistance.

(vi) Crisis-management applications:

In case of natural disasters, where the entire communications infrastructure would be in disarray, restoring communication quickly will be essential. Using 4G, both limited and complete communications capabilities, including internet and video services, would be set up in a matter of hours.

Apart from these, 4G technology would have high network capacity, high speed data transfer at any two points in the world with seamless connectivity and global roaming. No new infrastructure would be needed to install, as 4G will be interoperable with existing wireless standards, dynamically sharing and utilizing the already existing network resource.


It will have also the feature of smelling the background of the other person on the phone. If someone is cooking something and somebody wants to smell it, he/ she would be able to do that.
