Short notes on the volume of gases in man during respiration

Volume of Gases in Man:

1. Tidal volume:

Volume of air inspired or expired in each normal breath is called tidal volume of air. It is about 500ml of air.

2. Inspiratory reserve volume:

It is the volume of air that we can inspire over and above the tidal air by the deepest possible inspiration (it is about 3000 ml of air).

3. Expiratory reserve volume:

It is the volume of air that we can expire over and above the tidal air by the most forceful expiration, (it is about 1100 ml).

4. Residual volume:

The volume of air that remains in the lungs after the most powerful expiration is called residual volume of air. (It is about 1200 ml of air).

5. Vital Capacity:

This is the maximum volume of air a person expires from the lungs after filling with a maximum deep inspiratory reserve vol­ume plus the tidal volume plus the expiratory reserve volume. It is about 4600 ml.

6. Total lung capacity:

This equals the maximum volume of air that our lungs can normally hold. It includes total of tidal, inspiratory, reserve, expiratory reserve and residual volumes of air. It is about 5800ml.
