The problem of unemployment was so acute that the people began to starve in China; hence they left China and settled in foreign countries. In the beginning they migrated to America.

At that time America was in need of skilled labour but after 1890 the situation began to alter and the government of America had to pass several laws against the Chinese. It checked the Chinese immigrants going to America and they began to settle in other islands.

Their foreign immigration was checked, as the governments of Malaya and Philippines also made some laws against the Chinese settlers. But their regular departure to alien countries proves that their economic position was very deplorable in their own country.

Those who left their home towns and migrated to foreign countries not only improved the lot of their own families with their hard labour but also sent some portion of their income to their country for its progress and development.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

In the company of the foreigners the Chinese learnt some new ideologies and contributed to the outbreak of revolution.
