Famine means the extreme scarcity of food in a region. It is caused either due to the excessive rains called flood, or the absence of rains called drought. These two causes create scarcity of food.

The people cannot grow crops and plants due to bad condition of land. They do not have enough to buy foodstuff selling at a very high price. The price of food rises owing to shortage of stock in the market.

Hungry people beg from door to door, or they move to the nearest town for job or relief. Many of them die of starvation and disease. Diseases like cholera, plague, etc. break out. Cattle also die for want of grass. During famines, relief articles reach from government level in the affected areas. But that may be insufficient for longer survival.

When there is scarcity of food, the rich dealers buy and sell it at a very high price. They hoard their stock in secret places, and make unusual profit. This creates acute and serious food problem. Thus, famine brings disaster to human society in many ways.
