Short Notes on the problems faced by the Weimar Republic from the beginning

(i) From the very beginning the Weimar Republic faced the problem of political instability. Due to the system of proportional representation no single party managed to form the government. The government was formed by coalitions. The communists led by Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Leibknect and backed by Bolsheviks used the country’s instability to stage a revolution in 1919. The army successfully crushed the attempt.

(ii) In the following year, an armed right wing insurrection was attempted in Berlin. This was an attempt by conservatives to take the country back to the days of Prussian aristocratic domination.

The Republic throughout its career was haunted by extremism from the left and right wings.
