According to Harshacharita, Prabhakaravardhana had a second name, Pratapasila. Some coins, bearing the legend Pratapasila were found in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh and were assigned to Prabhakaravardhana.

He was a great general, a “lion to the Huna deer, a burning fever to the King of Sindh, a troubler of the sleep of Guijara, a bilious plague to that scent- elephant the lord of Gandhara, a looter to the lawlessness of Lata and an axe to the creeper of Malava’s glory” (Harshacharita).

However, in spite of these landatory references, Prabhakaravardhana, leading an expedition to Malwa to help Mahasena Gupta, failed in his objective and came back with two sons of this family identified with the later Guptas.

The brothers Kumara Gupta and Madhava Gupta were made companions to his sons, Rajyavardhana and Harshavardhana, by Prabhakaravardhana and his daughter Rajyasri was given in marriage to Grahavarman, son of King Adityavarman of the Maukharis.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Sometime later, while Rajyavardhana was leading an expedition against the Hunas, Prabhakaravardhana fell ill and died, circa ad 605.
