He was succeeded on 21 April, 1375 by his ninteen year old son Mujahid. He had been fully trained in the art of warfare and by virtue of his exceptional prowess had earned the sobriquet of ‘Balwant’.

His short reign of three years was spent in waging war against the Vijayanagar ruler who demanded the return of Raichur Doab.

In spite of some initial successes, Bahmani troops were defeated in a pitched battle near Vijayanagar and retreated after suffering a great loss in men and material.

Before the Sultan could return to his capital he was murdered while asleep by his cousin Daud Shah (April 16, 1378). Daud’s nefarious deed was resented by the nobles. He was killed about a month later while attending Friday prayers in the mosque of Gulbarga Fort (21 May 1378).
