After the death of Sun Yat Sen in March 1925, the leadership of KMT passed into the hands of Chiang Kai Shek. China had rightist leanings and was convinced that a show down with the Communist left wing of the party of was inevitable.

He, therefore, decided to crush the Communist within his party as well as outside and massacred most of the Communists which fell into his hands. Thus he purged cities likes Canton and Nanking of the communist influence.

As a result of this action of Chiang two rival governments were formed…the left-wing government with Wuhan as its capital and the Revolutionary Government of Chiang Kai Shek at Nanking which was soon recognized as national government of all China by foreign powers.

Chiang concentrated all the powers in his hands and appointed his friends and supporters to all important party and government posts. Thus slowly the KMT became highly conservative party. On the other hand, the Communists were forced to run for their life and take shelter in mountains and other convenient places.
