Nandivarman II was succeeded by his son Dantivarman. The Pallavamalla when he married the Rashtrakuta princess might have expected an improvement in the Rashtraku Pallava relations but contrary to expectations Dantivarman had to face not only increased Pandyan pressure in the south but also Rashtrakuta hostility in the north. Govinda III defeated Dantivarman, occupied Kanchi and returned home at his pleasure.

Dantivarman’s rule was on the whole nominal. He married a Kadamba princess called AggalanimmatL I An inscription in the Parathasarathi temple at Tirplicane, Madras describes Dantivarman as the ornament of the Pallava family; it records a gift of land. From the Gudimallam inscription we learn that a Bana chieftain Vijayadityamavalivalivanarayan was subordinate of Dantivarman.
