A chart showing the fate of each part of an early embryo, in a particular blastula is called a fate map.

The correct interpretation of gastrulation is impossible without knowledge of the position, which the presumptive germinal layers occupy in the blastula. The position may be ascertained in various ways.

A chart showing the fate of each part of an early embryo, in a particular blastula is called a fate map. The fate maps of different types of animal eggs can be constructed by following method:

Natural Method:

ADVERTISEMENTS:

The cytoplasm of fertilized egg of some animals like ascidians has natural color differences in various regions. From this color, the fate of that part can be interpreted.

Artificial Method:

The artificial methods are as follows:

Vital staining marking: It is done by the use of so-called vital stains which are retained by cells for considerable periods and in no way interfere with normal process. Vital stains are mild blue, sulphate, neutral fed, Jenus green etc.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Carbon particle marking: In this method, tiny particles of carbon are applied to the surface of embryo and thus used as markers.
