Mountains are classified on different basis such as, height, location, orogenesis and mode of origin.

Height:

Mountains are classified as low, high, rough and rugged.

Location:

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Coastal Mountains, Island Mountains and oceanic mountains.

Orogenesis:

Pre-Cambrian Mountains, Caledonian mountains, Varsican and Hercynian mountains and Alpine mountains.

The classification of mountains on the basis of orogenesis refers to the geologic periods during which these mountains were formed. The Pre-Cambrian Mountains have been worn down into plains.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

These plains are situated in Canadian Shield and eastern Scandinavia. They have been badly glaciated. Caledonian mountains still exist in Scotland, Norway and New England. However, they have been reduced to rough plains.

Hercynian Mountains form hilly or mountainous terrain in the Appalachians, the central European Highlands north of the Alps, the Urals (U.S.S.R.) and the mountains in inner Asia north of Tibet.
