A mountain may be defined as a conspicuous high land with a small summit area. It has also been defined as a portion of the land surface rising considerably above the surrounding country either as a single eminence or in a range or chain.

According to some authorities, the height of a high land to be qualified as a mountain should be above 600 meters (2,000 feet). If the height of such a high land is less than 600 m it is referred to as a hill.

Mountains belong to the second order of relief and present most spectacular relief features on the earth surface. A mountain peak is an isolated and more or less cone-shaped feature.

It is worth mentioning that mountain peaks add to the glory and grandeur of the physical environment. Mount Everest is a typical example of a mountain peak. Mountains have been described as ‘awe-inspiring regions of incredible beauty’.
