i. A biome is a very large ecosystem on land which has distinct types of vegetation and animal life.

ii. The assemblage of plant specific living in association with each other in a particular environmental framework is termed as vegetation.

iii. Though animals are an integral part of biomes, plant formations are the basis of their classification.


iv. Five main biomes of the world are:

  • Forests
  • Savanna
  • Temperate grassland
  • Deserts and
  • Tundra

v. Biomes are useful for studying the world patterns of vegetation cover.

vi. Small scale patterns of natural vegetation are most suitable to understand the distribution pattern of the plant cover.
