New star who seems to be pursuing the path of the great P.T. Usha on the Indian athletics scene is the long jumper Anju George.

Anju shot into the limelight in the world athletics when she participated in the 17th Commonwealth Games in Manchester. In the competition she competed against world-class athletes from England and Australia.

Proving wrong all the speculation about her talent, she won the bronze medal in the competition. George, the promising women athlete, covered a distance of 6.49 meters in her final jump and became the first woman athlete from India to win a medal at the Games.

George, repeating her feat of the commonwealth Games, brought another medal for India by winning the gold medal in the Bussan Asian Games. She will be the only woman athlete from India to participate in the highly-competitive European athletics circuit.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

To make the 2004 Olympics Games more memorable, she has planned to train herself under World long jump record-holder Mike Powell.
