It is through these awe-inspiring verses and the like, that the Qur’an secured to women an extremely respectable treatment by men throughout their lives-from the cradle to the grave.

To each of the clear commandments of the Qur’an on this subject, the Prophet added his own re-enforcing and re-asserting injunction, to be doubly sure that no injustice was ever done to any woman. To the unequivocal Qur’anic declaration:

And women shall have rights;

Equitably similar to the rights against them

ADVERTISEMENTS:

In his famous “Last Sermon” delivered at Mecca him appendixes a warning in these words:

Fear God in the matter of women.

Verily women have rights against you,

As you have rights against them.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

The Qur’anic reform in respect of daughters was re-enforced by the Prophet when on numerous occasions he promised great spiritual reward to those parents who were blessed with daughters and brought them up well without discriminating between them and male children.

As regards the wives he told men:

The most valuable possession of the man is a virtuous wife and the most virtuous among you in the sight of Allah is he who is nicest to his wife.”

Coming to the mothers, the Prophet by his repeated declarations put beneath their feet the highest spiritual bliss that one could ever aspire for-i.e., the paradise.
