Rashtrakuta king Govinda III’s fame primarily rests on his conquests. A born soldier and general Govinda III was the greatest Rashtrakuta king. First of all he defeated all his enemies and thus secured the throne for himself. Then he marched against the rulers south of the river Narmada.

He also got the unconditional surrender of king Charuponera of Nolambadi. He also defeated king Dantidurga of Kanchi. He then attacked the Eastern Chalukya of Vengi. As a result of his southern conquests Govinda III extended the Rashtrakuta dominion from Narmada in the north to the river Tungabhadra in the south.

Soon after Govinda turned his attention to the politics of northern India. He defeated the Pratihara king Nagabhatta II. Govinda also obtained the submission of Chakrayudha of Kanauj who was a puppet of the Pala Kins ‘Dharmapala of Bengal.

It is worthy of mention that Govinda’s northern expedition was undertaken more for glory rather than any territorial gains.
