Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded the Brahmo Samaj in 1828. This was the first attempt made in the 19th century to reform the Hindu society. This Samaj took the following steps to reform and modernise the Indian society:

A. It organised a movement to put an end to the inhuman practice of ‘Sati’.

B. It propagated the widow remarriage and encouraged inter caste marriage.

C. It strongly opposed the caste system as it created disunity in society.

E. It believed in one omnipotent God and opposed the worship of so many gods.

F. It preached against superstitions, useless practices and sacrifices.

G. It favoured the introduction of the western education to enlighten people.
