According to the ancient Indian educators, the term “Shiksha” (education) is derived from the Sanskrit j verbal root “Shas” which means “to discipline,” “to teach”, “to instruct” or “to control”. The term “Vidya” (education) is also derived from the Sanskrit verbal root “bid” which means “to know”.

The words Siksh is to be found in the Vedic hymns which mean “to learn to recite.’ In the Brahmanic, Upanisadic and Sutra literature the word adhkyayana is to be met with which literally means “to go near” and expresses the idea of pupils going to some teacher for education. Thus the initiation ceremony Upanayana was instituted which literally means “taking near”.

Parents in ancient India were taking their young children near a teacher (Guru) for their education. The word “Vinaya” means “an action in which inborn faculties are led out (i.e., trained) in a particularly way” or “an action in which (one) leads (oneself) in a particular manner.” Fourthly the term Prabodha means “awakening” or “enlightenment.” The first meaning is identical with that of “education”.
