Argaret Elizabeth Noble that is the name of commonly known Sister Nivedita was born in Ireland to a clergyman who worked in a poor parish. She was from her only childhood devoted to her father’s ideals, and so caught up to his ideal of selfless service.

At the very early age of just six years she had learnt to read the Bible, and even offered to visit the old and the sick and read the Bible the Holy book to them. At that early age, she seemed to realise that, reading the Holy book to the sick and infirm would give them relief. This in itself was too mature a thought for so young a child.

At the age of twenty, she started writing books. She was highly impressed by the speeches of Swami Vivekanand whom she happened to meet in England. In 1898 she came to India and stayed in the house of the Ramakrishna Mission at Calcutta, and now, she was known as Sister Nivedita.

Sister Nivedita started a school for girls – as, in those days she saw that girls were not allowed to go out of their homes to study in any schools. She used to go personally to the parents of the girls, to convince them of the necessity of educating the girls.
