Education of a caste in Vedic period was determined to a large extent by the particular occupations and functions assigned to it in society.

The Brahmin represented the intellectual and spiritual interests of the society. He was “required not merely to practice individual culture but also to give others the advantages of his skill either as a teacher or as a sacrificial priest or as a Purohita guiding the king in secular, political matters.” Administration and war was the normal duty of a Kshatriya. The bow was his special attribute.

The Vaisya received the required training for the economic upliftment of the society. Agriculture was his chief pursuit. There is little evidence regarding the education of the sudras.
