What causes hypotension; how to treat it?

A fall in the systolic blood pressure below the normal range is referred to as low blood pressure or hypotension. A systolic reading below 100mm Hg indicates a very feeble circulation and a reading below 80mm Hg is indicative of an impending death. A low blood pressure results in case of severe haemorrhage due to accidents or extensive injuries when there is severe loss of blood.

A sudden shock also might lower blood pressure. Hypotension may also result due to the burning of the tissues, failure of heart, disturbances of endocrine functioning like hypothyroidism and Addison’s disease of the adrrenal glands etc. Low blood pressure can be treated by medication as well as by adopting healthy habits. Proper mental attitude, mild exercise, sufficient rest etc., will help the blood pressure to come to normal. Some times use of mild intoxicants like alcohol may also give a temporarily relief.
