This disease is caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas oryzae. The symptoms of the disease are distinguished in three phases. Blighting phase- Straw to yellow coloured strips with wavy margin appear on leaves followed by drying and twisting of tips.
The attack of pathogen Erysiphe polygoni is marked by minute discoloured patches from which a powdery mass radiates on all sides. These floury white patches first appear on both surfaces of leaves, tendrils, pods and stem.
