No empire in history is survived forever. The Mughal Empire of India was no exception. It declined for various reasons. The following were the main causes of its decline. There were no systems of democratic decentralization in those days. The provincial Government looked to the emperor for orders. The burden of administration grew with the growth of the Empire.
Muhammad Shah ruled for a period that was reasonable longs enough to revive the empire. He, however, made to serious attempt to do so. The Marathas, Sikhs, Jats, Rajputs and the Afghans (of Rohilkhand) revolted against the Mughals.
Bahadur Shah I ascended the throne in AD 1707. He was a capable ruler. He tried to win over the Rajputs and the Marathas to his side by following a policy of compromise and conciliation.
