The development of industries in an area depends upon the following factors: The industries which use heavy raw material and in a large quantity are generally located in the place of the centre of the raw material. For example, Jute Industries are located in West Bengal; Cotton Textile Industry is located in Mumbai and Ahmadabad.
India is the native place of sugarcane, standing first in the world in respect of its production. We make sugar and other sweetening materials of sugarcane. Bagasses are used in making paper and cardboard.
There is a decline in demand for jute products due to several reasons. (ii) Machinery —Most of the units of jute industry is using old and outdated machinery. (Hi) High Cost—Due to old and outdated machinery the cost of the production of jute articles is increasing day by day. It discourages demand of the jute articles.
Ship-building is a large industry which requires huge capital. At present, Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata, Kochi, Mumbai and Marmagao are major ship-building centres of the country. All these centres are in public sector.
During the three decades of planned development there has been an impressive development of large scale industries, but India still remains predominantly a country of village and small industries.
