The international commission on Zoological and Botanical nomenclature has formulated rules contained in the international code of Nomenclature. Some of the rules are as under.

1. The system of nomenclature adopted must be binomial to indicate the name of a genus and species and trinomial for the name of subspecies also.

2. The scientific names must be in Latin or latinized words.

3. No two genera can have the same name in a kingdom and no two species can have the same name within a genus.

4. The name of genus should be a nominative singular, a single word and must begin with a capital letter. The species or specific name should be single or compound word and must begin with a small letter.

5. The name once published should not be normally changed.

6. The name must be related to any part of an animal or a plantor any stage of an organism’s life history etc.

7. The formation of family and sub-family names, should be followed by rules which are different in Zoological and Botanical codes.
