The Rameswaram temple houses Lord Shiva. The distinctive feature of this temple is the pillared corridor which completely surrounds the whole temple and form avenues leading up to it. The aggregate length of the corridors is calculated to be 3,000 feet.

The breadth of these fine columned passages varies from 17 feet to 21 feet and their height from floor to roof is about 25 feet.

Richly decorated pillars of good proportion are closely set and continue along the entire length, each pillar being 12 feet high and rising from a molded stylobate five feet high.

In almost every direction there is an unending perspective of columned halls, those of the north and south sides being particularly effective as they are over 700 feet in length.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

There a several Kunds and Wells inside the temple premises (approx 22), each with names of rivers.
