Predictions of 2012, brings an unseen and unjustified fear of devastation. These predictions are based on 5,125 years long Mayan civilization calendar. Maya civilization was a rich dynasty. The Mayans were efficient architects and astronomers. There were no wheels or carts present in those times yet they managed to create huge stone structures, some of which are still standing tall. They had made sharp and fine calculations about the astronomical phenomenon. Their calendar however abruptly ends on 13.0.00.

This date corresponds to the 21st December, 2012 according to the modern calendar. This abrupt end of the calendar is inferred in various ways. The most prominent prediction is that the end of calendar signifies the ‘end of world’. According to those who had studied Mayan calendars and are expert in translating their writings; Maya civilization believed in transformations. They believed there was a world before them and there will be one after them. But the anomaly arises due to the fact that the writing pieces are distorted. Hence while trying to translate their language one has to assume things. So, practically they have not pointed towards any end of the world but definitely stated some changes that can affect the earth.

There is a reference to planet ‘Nibiru’ in their writings. The planet revolves around our solar system in every three thousand six hundred years. There are certain citations and apprehensions that this may collide with the earth and result in devastation of the whole environ of the earth including the living and non-living things. But according to the NASA any such planet if present would have been discovered by now. Since, it has to be huge enough to cause substantial effect on earth. Otherwise several asteroids and cosmic contents hit the orbit of earth on daily basis. But they are so small and insignificant to cause any harm to earth. A planet like Nibiru is therefore hard to accept.

Then the second fear is about the planetary alignment towards the galactic equator. This phenomenon again is rare to happen. And in general, it happens every year when the sun reaches near the galactic equator and comes back around the same time of year. It is also feared that this will cause shifting of magnetic poles. But according to NASA even if the worst happens that is also not going to affect the earth. Since, the rotation or spinning of earth, none of either is dependent upon the magnetic poles of the earth.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

However, there is a potential threat to human life due to receding hydrogen in sun. But that phenomenon is going to take around 4 billion years to show significant effect. Increasing green house effect resulting in global warming is a matter of concern. But that will also not cause any immediate result or affect like that propagated by certain people.

Some claim that there can be volcanic eruption at the specified time which will result in shrouding of earth’s atmosphere in white and black cloud and will result in acid rain from the sky.

But all these natural calamities can occur at any time and without any prediction. Recent tsunami in Japan is a live example. It is sure that the life on earth will come to an end at some day. But there are no scientific and rational proofs that the day will be 21st December, 2012. Hence, it is better to take the life in stride and live each day to its fullest.
