May, 1920 Cinematograph Act was made a law. Exhibition of films made subject to prior certification.

Oct. 1927–Indian Cinematograph Committee was formed under the chairmanship of Mr. T.Ranaacharian. Censorship is necessary in India, to prevent the import, production and public exhibition of films which might demoralize the public, hurt religious susceptibilities or excite communal or racial animosities.

1952–Cinematograph Act adopted in its pre- independence form. The British tradition of severe censorship of films.

1969–Khosla Commission was appointed to report on the status of the entire film industry. Autonomous Censor Board, without any official government control – the examination of film as a whole and to allow kissing, nudity and violence, if they were integral to the theme.

1969–K.A. Abbas challenged the censorship of films in general. The verdict of the Supreme Court in favour of the film censorship.

1978–Working group on National Films Policy was appointed. Criticized the rigid approach of the film censors against the exposure of corruption in the Police and the government and political leadership as it prevents portrayal of social reality.

June,1983–Central Board of Film Censors renamed as Central Board of Film Certification.
