Bracts are special leaves from the axil of which a solitary flower or a cluster flowers arise. Its position is at the base of the pedicel. Besides, bract-like or seal appendages are found on the pedicel.

These are known as bracteoles. The bracteole may form a whorl just below the calyx as in China rose. Such a whorl is known as epicalyx. Bracts vary in size, color and longevity.

Their main function is to protect the floral bud. For this purpose, sometimes they become very much enlarged enclosing the whole cluster of flowers.

When green in color, they also manufacture food. Sometimes they become brightly colored in order to attract insects for pollination.
