The term inhalation is used commonly by the layman to describe preparations intended to be vaporized with the aid of heat, usually steam, and inhaled. Inhalations are solutions of medicaments administered by the nasal or oral respiratory route for local or systemic effect.

Nebulizers are suitable for administration of inhalation solutions only if they give droplets sufficiently fine and uniform in size so that the mist reaches the bronchitis.

The optimum particle size for penetration into the pulmonary cavity is 0.5 to 7.0 p.m. Pressurized aerosols generate fine mists and hence posses basic advantages over the older nebulizers.

Example 01: Prepare and dispense Aqueous Inhalation.

Eucalyptus oil 6.0 ml

Menthol 3.0 g

Light magnesium carbonate 6.50 g

Purified water, sufficient to produce 100.0 ml

Method of Dispensing:

Powder weighed amount of menthol in glass mortar and pestle, add eucalyptus oil and stir until the solid has dissolved and add other additives and mix well.

Example 02: Prepare and dispense Benzoin Inhalation.

Benzoin 10.0 g

Prepared storax 6.85 g

Specially denatured spirit, sufficient to produce 100.0 ml

Method of Dispensing:

Benzoin and prepared storax should be macerated with 7.5 ml of specially denatured spirit for twenty four hours. Filter and add specially denatured spirit passed through filter to produce 100 ml.

Example 03: Prepare and dispense Menthol Inhalation.

Menthol 1.0 g

Specially denatured spirit, sufficient to produce 50.0 ml

Method of Dispensing:

Mix menthol with specially denatured spirit in mortar and pestle. Add sufficient specially denatured spirit through filter and produce 50 ml.
