A museum is a place where antique objects related to art, science, history, geography etc. are placed for studies. It is a place of great interest. It is highly informative and educative. A visit to the museum is an education in itself. There are a number of museums in every country. In India we have museums in big cities.

Once I happened to visit Kolkata. I had heard that Kolkata museum is one of the best in the country. Hence I desired to visit it. It was a great chance for me. I have a friend in Kolkata who agreed to accompany me. Finally, both of us went to the museum.

It is very big museum. Its building has many rooms. These rooms are neat and clean. The exhibits are properly arranged. The collection of the museum is made up of different objects collected from various parts of the country. They represent every branch of science, arts, history and folk arts.

There is a hall in the left side of the entrance. It has big collections of mammals of all types. There were common mammals like the dog, cat, cows, etc. which we could recognise. All these exhibits throw light on the evolution of life on the earth.

Next to this room was the exhibition room of bird’s specimens. Another room housed the specimens of reptiles. All animal specimens were shown with short records.

We then went in a large room where many beautiful specimens of rocks were kept. We also saw ores of various metals and their finished forms. There I saw many old relics. I saw different dresses worn by the Rajput soldiers in the past.

I was much surprised to see the weapons used by Indian warriors. Among these weapons there were swords, shields, lances, and armour. They were very strong, heavy and large in size giving an idea of the impressive personality of our past warriors.

In other hall the articles collected from different sites were kept. These contained potteries, statues, bangles, picture tables, metal instruments and many more objects that have been dug out from the buried towns. Many articles of similar kinds are still found in use today. These objects give an insight on the culture and the social way of living in the past.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Many specimens of handicraft collected from all over the world are kept on display in this museum the collection deals with a long past. This also tells us the story of the development of handicraft in various parts of the country and abroad.

There were many more things of our past in the museum. We visited almost all units of the museum and saw a lot of things. We enjoyed our visit to the museum. It is really the store-house of information and knowledge. Past becomes live in front of one’s eye. Hence, museum is a worth visiting place.
