Jwala Gutta is an excellent badminton player who has proven her mettle in national as well as international games.

Jwala was born on 7th September, 1983 in Wardha, Maharashtra. Her father, Kranti Gutta is an Indian and her mother, Yelan Gutta is Chinese in origin. Both of them are ardent Mahatma Gandhi’s followers and met at his Sevagram Ahram only. Her father hailed from a family of freedom fighters. Jwala was born in Maharashtra but her upbringing took place in Hyderabad. Her father moved with his family to Andhra Pradesh in the year 1988, where she spent her growing years. Jwala married fellow badminton player and Arjuna Awardee Chetan Anand on 17th July, 2005. But the marriage couldn’t survive and they got divorced on 29th June, 2011. Chetan had also registered various titles at national and international levels as a senior badminton player.

She is a left-handed player who had excelled as one of the best doubles player in India. She is coached by S.M.Arif. She had played impressively and clinched various national and international level titles. She had created history by winning a bronze medal in the women’s doubles at World Championship in 2011. She had also won gold medal in Commonwealth games, 2010 held at New Delhi in the women’s double.

She surprised everyone in the Commonwealth games by winning another gold medal in mixed doubles game also. Previous to it, she had managed to reach the Semi Finals in the year 2002 in an international level tournament, India Asia Satellite Tournament. She also finished up as runner up at the LE VOLANT D’OR Tournament in the year 2004. She had also reached the Final rounds of the Scottish International Tournament, 2004 and Portuguese Badminton Championship in the year 2004 in women’s doubles.

She had also won various international tournaments in women’s doubles, viz. Cyprus International tournament in the year 2007, Indian International Tournament and Pakistan International Tournament, all of them in women’s doubles. She had mainly paired with Shruti Kurrien and Ashwini Ponnappa.

She had won various international level championships in mixed doubles also. She won the Jakarta Satellite Tournament and Welsh International Tournament in the year 2005. Apart from these titles, she had registered victories in Sri Lanka International Satellite Tournament, Cyprus badminton International Tournament and Indian International Challenge Tournament in the year 2007. Further she won the Nepal International Series tournament, Bitburger Open Grand Prix tournament and KLRC Bulgaria Open Grand Prix Tournament in 2008. Her latest achievement in the year 2009 was when she reached the Finals of the World Super Series held in Malaysia. However she lost the match but ended up well. She had seen the career best ranking as World No.6 doubles player. But currently she had been reigning over 21st spot in the ranking list.

Recently, Jwala was in news not for her sports move but for her alleged link ups with former Indian cricket team captain Mohammad Azharuddin who is also a Member of Parliament. Though, both of them had denied the allegations.
