The man who took the responsibility of opening the Test matches after Sunil Gavaskar was Arun Lai. Aran Lai, being an average player, always tried to hold the innings through his patient batting.

Arun Lai was born on August 1, 1955 in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. He inherited the cricketing skills from his ancestors. He made his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Madras in 1982-83 and in the One-Day version a year before.

Although he was an underachiever at the highest level, he was a good performer in the domestic cricket and stands fifth in the all- time Ranji ran aggregates with an average of53.83.

Given an opportunity to play against Pakistan at his adopted home in Kolkata, he justified his selection by two half centuries after Sunny’s retirement, followed a sequence of successive Test appearances, which began promisingly enough against the Windies when he scored his highest Test score of 93 at Kolkata. But his career ended in 1989. During the 1989-90 Ranji season, his 189 runs against Mumbai helped Bengal to win the Trophy
