Every cigarette packet carries the statutory warning Smoking is injurious to health. A campaign against smoking on the television, newspapers and magazines has been practiced in our country.

Even celebrities are being involved in anti-smoking campaign. Still the number of smokers is on the rise. In particular, the youngsters are getting hooked to it. Smoking is first step of a ladder, which leads to drug addiction.

Drugs consist of tobacco, smack, heroin, and charas. Ganja etc addiction is a total dependence or surrender to an object; in this case it is drugs. An addict could be easily spotted. They have a certain specific characteristics in their personality. You can identify an addict by a glazed look in his eye, sunken cheeks, or dark circles under eyes.

Once addicted, the addict does not even realize that he is beginning to depend so heavily on the object of his addiction. In fact, soon he becomes a slave to his drug and life seems meaningless to him. Drinking is known to mark a person aggressive, abusive and unreasonable. Man loses interest in the normal routine, becoming thereby a misfit in society.

An alcoholic could be expected to lose control of senses and sometimes lose his inhibitions to such an extent that he doesn’t realize what he does or says. This often leads him to display behaviour traits that are almost unacceptable to a civilized society. Some alcoholics get violent and get into unnecessary fights. Their spirits may be high but their bodies are unable to match the heightened strength of their mind. Thus they lose the fight they get into and become laughing stocks in the society where they live.

Less harmful addictions are the ones that involve tea or coffee. Indians as a rule are addicts of tea and coffee remains more popular in southern parts of India. Tea and Coffee, the beverages were known as stimulants and people often find it difficult to open their eyes without sipping bed-tea.

Addiction is a curse that usually strikes the weak minded. People with determination and a strong will power do not get addicted. In fact, even if they find themselves depending too heavily on anything they fight it hard and free themselves of the dependence.
