Several Projects have been undertaken in India to utilise the water of rivers efficiently. These projects involve the construction of dams, reservoirs and canals and serve a number of purposes simultaneously. Their main objective is the overall development and thus they are known as multi-purpose river valley projects. The main purpose of these projects are to provide facilities of irrigation, flood control and production of hydroelectricity.

Some of the major multi-purpose projects of the country are discussed below :

1. Damodar Valley Project-This project is the joint venture of West Bengal and Jharkhand. It is on the river Damodar.

Bhakhra Nangal Project-This project is the joint venture of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. It has been built on the river Satluj.

Riband Project-This project has been constructed across the river Rihand in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh.

Nagarjun Sagar Project-This project has been constructed on the river Krishna in Andhra Pradesh.

Tungbhadra Project-It is a joint venture of Andhra Pradesh and Kamataka and is built on the river Tungbhadra.

7. Chambal Project-It is a joint undertaking of the states Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. It has been built on the river Chambal,

33. Bargi Project-This project has been built on the river Bargi in Madhya Pradesh.

34. Pong Dam-This project is on the river Beas in Himachal Pradesh.

35. Sharda Project- It is a project built on the rivers Sharda and Gomti in Uttar Pradesh.

36. Saharavasi Project-This project is the largest in Asia and is built near Jog waterfall in Karnataka.

37. Indira Gandhi Project-It is a joint venture of Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana and is built on the rivers Satluj and Beas.

38. Sardar Sarovar Dam-It is built on the river Narmada in Gujarat.

39. Dulhasti Project-It is built on the river Chenab in Jammu & Kashmir.

40. Mahi Project-This project is situated in Gujarat and is built on the river Mahi.

41. Panchet Dam-It is a joint venture of Jharkhand and West Bengal built on the river Damodar.

42. Tilayya Project-This project is built on the river Barakar in Jharkhand.

43. Mata Tila Dam-It is a joint venture of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and is built on the river Betla.

44. Bann Sagar Project– It is a joint venture of the Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and is built on the river Sone.

45. Telgu Ganga Project- This project is meant for the water supply to the city of Chennai from’ the river Krishna.

46. Ikri Hydroelectric project-It is built on the river Satluj.
