Election of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha:

He is one of the members of the Lok Sabha. The Lok Sabha elects him in its first sitting. The man who gets the majority, is elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The Speaker is normally a member of the majority party. But once elected, he has to conduct the business of the house impartially.

Main Functions of the Speaker

The Speaker presides over the sittings of the Lok Sabha.

He advises the Prime Minister and decides the programme of the Lok Sabha.

He allows the members of the Lok Sabha to present their motions. They have to obey his authority.

He gives warnings to the members in order to maintain discipline in the House.

He can postpone the sittings of the Lok Sabha.

He signs the bills after the Lok Sabha has passed them. He send® them to the Rajya Sabha or to the President.

He presides over joint-sessions of the Parliament.

He has a right to cast his vote, too.
