Meiosis occurs during gamete formation (spermatogenesis and oogenesis). Like mitosis, it is preceded by the duplication of the chromosomes during interphase, but this duplication is followed by two successive cell divisions, meiosis-I and meiosis-II, both of which have the stages: interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase.

Meiosis-II is almost identical to mitosis. The result is the form ation of four haploid daughter cells.
