Hydrocarbons are important pollutants of atmospheric air and their estimation is often desired. These compounds can be conveniently collected in absorption column which is packed with porus styrene divinyle benzene polymer through which the air is drawn for a known time and at known rate of flow. The absorption column is subsequently heated to disorb the sample which is subjected to gas chromatographic analysis with flame ionization detector. Gas chromatography couple with mass spectrophotometry (CG/MS) is a very efficient and suitable technique for the identification of low levels of hydrocarbons. The spectrum obtained is adequate for unambiguous identification of organic compounds in air samples.
