India has a wide variety of wildlife and rich in wildlife heritage. Elephant, one-horned rhinoceroses, camel, wild asses, Indian bison, buffalo, nilgai, deer, lions, Bengal tigers are some of them. For preserving natural habitat and wildlife, our government has set up, 89 national parks, 490 sanctuaries and 13 biosphere reserves. Besides these 27 Project Tiger, Project Elephant and Project Rhinoceros have been set up by the government in different states. The government has also programmes for the conservation of wetland, mangroves and coral reefs.
